OS/2 Warp
 |
OS/2 is an IBM Operating System, design for IBM Compatible
Computers (those with Intel, Cyrix or AMD processors). It is a full 32
bit multitasking powered OS, which means you will not have the same memory
problems that you had to contend with in DOS (and to a lesser extend Windows
95). In some ways OS/2 is more like unix (It being a true 32 bit multitasking
OS) Though Like Windows it is relatively easy to setup though .

So what
do you get with OS/2: Warp Four:
-
A stable, user friendly Operating System
-
Voice Dictation and Navigation, which offers both dictation
and voice navigation
-
A platform to run OS/2, Windows (16 and some 32 bit), Dos,
and Java Programs. OS/2 offers, "real Javatm " both runtime
and toolkit (for developing ones own java applets and programs) Not the
cut down, disembodied, non-standards version offered by Windows
-
Excellent internet and TCPIP support
-
Great security, unlike windows there is no ActiveX to allow
other people to destroy or pinch your data over the net.
-
OpenDoc enabled
-
Support for OpenGL, for great graphics
-
Great bonus pack full of applications, as well as a sampler
CD, full of OS/2 Applications and utilities
-
A great scripting language called Rexx (and now Object Rexx)
A Brief History of OS/2
OS/2 was Originally developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM,
originally planned to replace DOS It was also intended to be "Platform
independent i.e. it would run on any computer...though this plan was latter
to be dropped. Like the MacIntosh it was to be a Gui based OS (Graphical
User Interface) Though the first edition like DOS was text based.... However,
like all plans OS/2 took longer to develop than originally planned, and
Microsoft left IBM, and put all their efforts in developing Windows....How
many version are there now.....
IBM continued to develop OS/2 and has continued
to make improvements to its functionality and performance. Version three
was a definite improvement over previous edition, and OS/2 Warp 4 (Which
was cod named Merlin) continues in this tradition, though it requires a
higher spec computer, than Warp 3.
About OS/2 Warp
OS/2 Warp 4 combined with OS/2 Warp Server provides
a full range of functions for the enterprise, small and medium businesses,
and connected users. OS/2 Warp Server provides an application server foundation
with integrated file and print sharing, backup and recovery connections
systems management, advanced printing, and Internet access. OS/2 has also
integrated one of the best TCP/IP stacks available. Today’s world of network-centric
computing demands the advanced functions OS/2 Warp Server provides.
